Our Nutritional Science competences are what enable us to boost the nutritional and sustainability value of food for human consumption and animal feed. Using these competences, we drive scientific advances in human milk oligosaccharides, nutritional lipids and vitamins for early life nutrition, pharma/medical nutrition, and dietary supplements, by developing products for gut health, personalized nutrition, and various health solution platforms.
In terms of sustainability in animal farming, our nutritional competences enable:
Our competences include the expertise and technology needed to identify and develop novel compounds and substances, and transform active ingredients into valuable solutions and applications with demonstrable safety and efficacy.
Nutritional Sciences enable us to create a wide range of nutritional solutions for both animals and humans, covering vitamins, carotenoids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, human milk oligosaccharides, feed and food enzymes, pre- and probiotics, eubiotics, and bioactive natural ingredients. Our ambition is to deliver science-based, sustainable solutions for animal and human nutrition and health, and to address the challenges of a growing population on a planet with finite resources.
The concept of nutrition and all it entails is complex, which is why we draw on a wealth of scientific talent covering the complete range of modern biology – from genetics to transcriptomics, metabolomics, proteomics, and all the way to animal and human research. Our people enable us to create new biological models and support the entire range of areas within nutritional science. They include:
How strong are our Nutritional Science competences? DSM is the only company that can supply the full range of vitamins in the forms most suitable for humans and all animal species. Furthermore, we offer the most complete portfolio of enzymes in the industry, along with a diverse range of carotenoids, targeted oligosaccharides, eubiotics, mycotoxin mitigants, and nutritional lipids.
Our competences have also helped us develop breakthrough products like BALANCIUS®. This is a unique new feed enzyme (microbial muramidase) that breaks down peptidoglycans in bacterial cell debris, unlocking the hidden potential of broilers’ gastrointestinal functionality.
More recently, our human nutrition and health expertise is helping to address conditions such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and inflammatory bowel disease, among others. And, of course, there’s also Bovaer®, our solution for reducing the amount of harmful methane cows emit by up to 30%.
Our Human Nutrition & Health RT&D centers are located in Kaiseraugst (Switzerland), Columbia MD (US), Shanghai (China), and Delft (the Netherlands). Those focusing on Animal Nutrition & Health are in Kaiseraugst (Switzerland), Village Neuf (France), Bazhou (China), Tulln (Austria), and Mairinque and Caçadinha (Brazil).
