2018 theme: Polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) nutrition and related topics

The theme for the 2018 award is Polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) nutrition and related topics. Nominations can relate to human studies and animal studies as well as those involving more basic or mechanistic work relevant to PUFA nutrition. Nominees will be judged based on both the connection to the theme and the quality of the scientific research.

As in previous years, we have teamed up with ISSFAL to invite nominations for this year’s award, which forms part of DSM’s Bright Science Awards program. The award is and international award, open to current PhD students and those who have recently obtained their PhD.

Raphael Chouinard-Watkins

In 2016 we granted the award to Raphael Chouinard-Watkins for his studies of mechanisms underlying Alzheimer's disease. His work helped us to better understand these underlying factors relating to the disease and was highly translational. His work was very well presented and he handled questions from all five judges with pointed and clear answers, while adding additional observations and data to the discussion.

Raphael Chouinard-Watkins was judged to be the overall winner in his studies of mechanisms underlying Alzheimer's disease. His studies used known genetic variations in the APO E allele that are related to disease incidence and studied their metabolic in mice. His work helped us to better understand these underlying factors relating to the disease and was highly translational. His work was very well presented and he handled questions from all five judges with pointed and clear answers while adding additional observations and data to the discussion.

Selection and judging

From the total number of nominations received, four candidates will be selected for the final judging round. These four candidates will be invited to present their research in a short presentation during a special DSM - ISSFAL Symposium to be held at the 13th Congress of the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids in Las Vegas, USA on 27-31 May 2018. A committee of leading scientists will select the winner.

Award presentation

The award will be presented during the plenary session of the ISSFAL 2018 congress on 31 May 2018.
