How cows can help us fight climate change

The proven solution to immediately reduce enteric methane from dairy and beef cattle

An urgent focus on methane

More than 100 countries recognized methane reduction as the single most effective strategy to keep the goal of limiting warming to 1.5˚C within reach. And there’s no time to lose. Rapidly reducing methane emissions from energy, agriculture, and waste can achieve near-term climate goals — with additional benefits for public health and agricultural productivity.

Estimated current savings in tons of CO2e*

By reducing methane emissions from cattle, farms using Bovaer® in their feed are making a measurable impact on climate change every day.

Cows make Methane

Cows provide nutritious meat and dairy products that we thrive on today - full of the high-quality protein, micronutrients and essential fatty acids our bodies need. Cows also support the livelihood and food security of more than a billion people around the world.

However, cows generate methane, a greenhouse gas with consequences for our planet. Believe it or not, nearly 60% of emissions created globally during milk production come in the form of enteric methane, released into the atmosphere burp by burp. A single dairy cow can generate three tons of CO2 equivalent every year.

Introducing Bovaer®

Bovaer® is a feed additive that enables farmers to achieve a significant and immediate reduction of the environmental footprint of meat, milk, and dairy products. On average, it reduces enteric methane emissions by 30% from dairy cows and 45% from beef cattle.

How it works?

In a cow's rumen, microbes help break down food. This releases hydrogen and carbon dioxide. An enzyme combines these gases to form methane. Bovaer® is a feed supplement that suppresses the enzyme, so less methane gets generated. As it acts, Bovaer® is safely broken down into compounds already naturally present in the rumen.
