Addressing defense trends in Asia-Pacific with Dyneema®

More than two years after the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, Avient is looking forward to exhibiting at our first major defense industry event in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. The Defence Service Asia Exhibition and Conference (DSA) in Kuala Lumpur this March is a welcome opportunity to reconnect with customers and end-users face-to-face.

In addition, it’s good to see normal service starting to resume in the defense sector after several years of intense disruption. In 2020 and much of 2021, the story was that of postponements and cancellations of many projects and tenders as national budgets were channeled toward fighting the pandemic and helping those in need.

Although business is starting to return to pre-COVID levels, the recovery period has brought new challenges to the market. Like other industries, we find ourselves in the midst of a supply chain crisis marked by acute raw materials shortages and logistical constraints, and lengthy delays to shipments. These obstacles have sparked often-unprecedented increases in the price of energy and raw materials, along with rising shipping costs.

To keep operations running smoothly for our APAC customers, Avient has taken extensive steps to insulate ourselves from a volatile external environment – including increasing our production capacity and further developing our raw material stockpiles. We’ve also set up a regional warehouse so that goods can be delivered sustainably and cost-effectively with fewer air shipments.

Finding new ways to add value

Having established security of supply for our customers, we can focus our efforts on innovation and on finding new ways to support the defense value chain. In recent months, Avient has introduced two new product grades to the APAC market – our Dyneema® SB125 and of Dyneema® HB30 solutions are enabling advancements in soft and hard armor applications, respectively.

Sustainability remains at the core of our R&D approach, and in 2021 we introduced the world’s first-ever bio-based HMPE fiber, a first-of-its-kind innovation that directly aligns with Avient’s ambitions to support the UN Sustainability Development Goals. We hope our solution will empower Dyneema® customers and end-users to help safeguard the environment and protect future generations from the worst effects of climate change.

The cornerstone of our offering is our strong regional team – our colleagues have at least 10 years of ballistic industry experience under their belts. Because they understand the end-market need, they’re able to support our partners in building a more sustainable business. Their expertise, together with our dedicated technical center in Singapore, provides ample on-the-ground resources to support our customers and to co-develop ballistic concepts using Dyneema® unidirectional (UD) materials.

Our innovation efforts up close

The results of our innovation and collaboration efforts will be on display at DSA 2022, where we’ll be exhibiting the advanced ballistic stopping power of Dyneema®, including our Dyneema® HB311 & HB30 product grades. We’ll also be demonstrating two innovative new helmet designs developed by DPM APAC customers using Dyneema® technology. These include a lightweight rifle helmet made with Dyneema® HB311 that can repel 62 x 39mm AK-47 MSCs and 7.62 x 51mm NATO balls, as well as a standard helmet made with Dyneema® HB30 that’s significantly lighter than conventional materials with equal or superior ballistic performance.

Besides ballistic helmets, DSA participants will be able to view soft armor made with Dyneema®, including our most recent Dyneema® SB125, together with hard panels featuring Dyneema® Force Multiplier Technology and standard grade products.

To be sure, APAC’s defense sector is entering a brave new world, and we plan to be there for our customers every step of the way.
