Browse these pages to learn more about how our industry experts, scientists and engineers work hand in hand with our customers to develop next generation solutions.

Making electronic devices Safer, Thinner and More Sustainable

Electronics and smartphone components manufacturers are placing many requirements on the materials used to make the parts found in a host of applications. The materials utilized must be strong, have functional integration, and overcome the design challenges often faced when designing very small and thin pieces. The trends of miniaturization, increased structural strength and design freedom by integration put an ever higher demand on engineering plastics.

At DSM, our materials and strong application understanding of the electronics industry can help a design engineer design thinner parts and still achieve structural properties.

SAFER

Decreasing the risk of fire in USB-C connectors

Fast-charging smart devices are increasingly important to consumers. USB-C connectors rapidly restore electronic battery life, yet these cables can create a fire hazard if manufacturers select low-performance insulating plastics. Learn about proven materials solutions that decrease safety risks and enable you to deliver high-performance fast-charging connectors with stringent design requirements.

THINNER

Making electronic & mobile phone components thinner, stronger and integrated

Electronics and smartphone components manufacturers are placing many requirements on the materials used to make the parts found in a host of applications. The materials utilized must be strong, have functional integration, and overcome the design challenges often faced when designing very small and thin pieces. The trends of miniaturization, increased structural strength and design freedom by integration put an ever higher demand on engineering plastics.

MORE SUSTAINABLE

Partnering with Samsung Electronics to develop first smartphone made with recycled ocean-bound fishing nets

Working with Samsung Electronics, DSM tailored Akulon® RePurposed to meet the specific high-performance requirements of the new Galaxy S22 series and Galaxy Tab S8 series. As such, the material is incorporated into key components including the Galaxy S22 series’ key bracket and inner cover of the S Pen, as well as Tab S8 series’ inner support bracket. Thanks to its unique properties, Akulon® RePurposed offers an excellent balance and leading mechanical performance, and has already been applied to various industries, such as automotive, consumer goods, and electronic devices.
