The combination of superior flow and high temperature performance of Stanyl has been established in the past years in the automotive and consumer electronics domains. Where the high temperatures mechanics is typically reflected in the high temperature applications and in the excellent weldline performance of Stanyl, the superior flow manifests itself in domain of consumer electronics. Besides the good flow to get the parts filled in a productive manner, the high crystallization rate provides not only good cycle times in molding, but results in almost complete crystallization of PA46 in thin walled part. Besides reducing warpage of the material important in the consumer electronics, this property also brings advantages in the noise reduction in moving parts for example in e-vehicles.

Sustaining high performance

Stanyl is the only aliphatic polyamide that is capable of working in the field of the high-temperature polyamides, and with that it also takes the largest volume space in that area of all polymers. When focusing on the details, the core strength stems from two key properties being the high crystallization rate, which leads to small crystals, and additionally the high degree of crystallinity. These two properties create three key strengths in Stanyl, being the excellent mechanical performance at high temperatures, excellent wear and friction properties and superior flow.

Material choice in USB-C connectors is crucial

DSM’s Polyamide 46 (PA46), Stanyl, not only offers the highest CTI value of 600 Volt but is also the only material in the high-temperature polyamide world with a UL94-V0 specification down to 0,18mm, precisely the pitch size used in this USB-C type connector.

Stanyl also provides the lowest wear and friction so that also in challenging automotive environments, where it is specified for up to 20,000 mating cycles (plug in/plug out cycles).

From a production point of view, it provides the highest flow which offering molders and connector manufacturers a lot of added value because it increases productivity / reduces manufacturing costs.

Sustaining high performance

The first commercializations of Stanyl were achieved 30 years ago. Currently, it is the largest single polymer being used in the high-performance polyamide landscape. The symmetry of the chemical structure lays the foundation of its success as it provides the basis for the high degree of crystallinity and fast crystallization speed. These two features are the basis of the three key strengths of Stanyl being excellent high-temperature mechanics, excellent wear and friction performance and superior flow. These strengths are what drives the business of Stanyl. Because of these features, this materials displays exceptional retention of mechanical properties after passing through the glass transition, giving rise to its high-temperature performance.
