‘Sea’ the Difference algal-sourced omega-3s can make for marine life

By:  Talking Nutrition Editors

Summary

  • 71% of the earth’s surface is water, but the fishing practices used to obtain omega-3s are impacting our delicate marine ecosystems. As an advocate for protecting and preserving marine life, DSM has launched a new campaign that coincides with the expansion of its leading life’s™ portfolio.
  • The newly expanded portfolio includes two new products – life’s™OMEGA O1030DS*, and life’s™OMEGA Ultra** – which offer improved potency and economic accessibility for the range.
  • Through an immersive video and informative content, DSM’s new ‘Sea the Difference’ campaign aims to inspire brands to explore the potential of algal omega-3s as a sustainable nutritional solution to fish oil.

We may seem far removed from it, but our oceans are home to countless living creatures that are harmed every day by intrusive practices like harvesting wild fisheries for omega-3s. It’s not just fish; 60,000 sharks and whales, as well as countless turtles and seabirds, are needlessly lost to fishing driven by omega-3s.1 The fragile ecosystem beneath our waters cannot withstand this – in fact, between 1970 and 2012, marine life declined by almost 50%.2 Consumers are also taking note. As more people pay attention to the environmental impact of the products they purchase, algal omega-3s can make a world of difference for manufacturers looking to create more sustainable supplement innovations and stay ahead in the market. DSM’s new ‘Sea the Difference’ campaign will help to bring this message to life.

The need for omega-3s

Omega-3s are essential to us in many ways; they offer important benefits including heart health, eye health, cognitive health, immunity and, of course, infant development. Consequently, the global demand for omega-3s is enormous, leading to almost a third of all commercial fishing being conducted to obtain fish oil – a rich source of omega-3. But there is a better, more sustainable way.

DSM’s new sustainably-focused campaign will spotlight the potential of algal-sourced omega-3 ingredients and educate audiences on the impact of overfishing on our wild fisheries and ocean life. Officially launched on Earth Day 2022 (April 22nd), the campaign coincides with the expansion of DSM’s market-leading life’s™ range of algal-sourced omega-3 products, to include two new line extensions: life’s™OMEGA O1030DS* and life’s™OMEGA Ultra**. Providing 100% algal-sourced omega-3, DSM’s life’s™ portfolio offers an omega-3 alternative to fish oil, with zero impact on marine life, while maintaining high quality and potency. It’s also the first and only commercially available plant-based omega-3 that delivers the benefits of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) fatty acids in a single source.

Not enough fish in the sea

We aspire to live in a world where humans and marine life can live in greater harmony and we’re excited to lead the way in putting people and sea creatures side-by-side through our leading portfolio and evocative new campaign. Making the switch to 100% algal-sourced omega-3s could save 22 million tonnes of fish per year and have a positive impact on countless diverse marine ecosystems,3 but we can’t do it alone.

Want to find out more about algal-sourced omega-3s and how you can make a positive impact on our diverse marine ecosystem?
