Building a Foundation for Infants' Health: The Role of LCPUFAs & HMO Innovations

Don't miss this opportunity to learn more about our complete offering to support infant nutrition.

Human Milk Oligosaccharides

Human Milk Oligosaccharides are complex carbohydrates and the third most abundant solid component of human milk after lipids and lactose. Clinical data in infants, indicate that Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs) may help to develop the microbiota in newborns by serving as a food source for the good bacteria in the gut. Naturally occurring in breast milk, HMOs have evolved over thousands of years, with HMO research suggesting that specific HMOs can provide us with unique health benefits. In particular, Human Milk Oligosaccharides may help support immunity and gut health, with a potential role in cognitive development, which may open future innovation opportunities.

HMO Donation Program

The HMO donation program was established in 2010 to expand the knowledge and support the research in HMOs. All healthcare professionals, researchers and academics interested in the field of Human Milk Oligosaccharide research can apply for HMO donation.

To date, DSM has supported over 100 research projects through the donation program. These projects span 55 different research centers all around the globe. The donation program accesses DSM’s HMO library, which contains nearly 20 different HMO structures and mixtures.

Nutritional Lipids

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (ARA) long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) play a central role in the development and function of the brain, eyes and immune system during infancy. Breast milk is the gold standard for infant feeding and naturally contains both DHA and ARA, typically with ARA levels higher than those of DHA. Recent findings suggest DHA and ARA have positive effects on a child’s development when provided together and in efficacious levels, during infancy. Experts in infant nutrition endorse the presence of both DHA and ARA at ratio of at least 1:1  in infant and follow-on formula during this critical window of development.

DSM’s nutritional lipids portfolio, sourced from algal oil, can meet all of product needs for infant nutrition, to provide a natural, sustainable and vegetarian alternative to fish oil.
