High performance processing with Akulon and Akulon Utraflow

Akulon® offers easy processing and consistent batch-to-batch performance when used for injection molding applications. The Akulon portfolio contains polyamide 66, polyamide 6 – as well as Akulon® UltraflowTM grades (representing our high flow portfolio).

Compared to polyamide 66, Akulon polyamide 6 offers a lower melting point, slower crystallization and greater toughness, providing key benefits for manufacturers. Furthermore, our Akulon Ultraflow portfolio offers superior flow with no compromise on mechanical properties: That means up to 80% better flow rate than standard polyamide 6 materials, with a potential cycle time reduction of up to 40%.

Broader processing window vs 66

The melting point of polyamide 6 is around 40°C lower than polyamide 66 – which means that processors have a 40°C broader temperature window to work with – despite the fact that both materials have a similar level of thermal degradation.

Lower temperature settings on machine leads to lower energy costs; and when coloring with cadmium-free pigments the lower thermal stress gives manufacturers more freedom of choice (with cheaper pigments, for some colors a possibility).

Superior flow vs 66

Akulon provides up to 20% better flowing material at similar temperature settings compared to polyamide 66, with the following important value gains:

  • Lower injection pressures are required; while smaller molding machines with lower clamp force can be used with a lower machine cost per part
  • Faster injection means shorter cycle times
  • Easier on-line coloring: The color mixes more readily giving a uniform, streak-free colored part. The result: Better part appearance with a lower risk of rejects
  • Better part appearance when using reinforced grades; while easier flowing materials provide a smoother, resin-rich surface. Furthermore, splay or flow lines aren’t needed, enabling quality parts that don’t need painting.

Slower crystallization vs 66

Slower crystallization of polyamide 6 means that the material doesn’t freeze off as quickly. It also provides a better surface appearance, especially for reinforced grades, with no orange peel effect. Meanwhile, hold pressure can be maintained longer with reduced tendency for sink marks.

Furthermore, in secondary operations like welding, the lower melting point of polyamide 6 enables higher weld line strengths for parts under stress, boosting safety in applications like air inlet manifolds.

More toughness with polyamide 6 vs 66

Parts made with Akulon polyamide 6 have greater toughness and better ductility directly after molding than parts made with polyamide 66, especially in reinforced grades. This lowers the risk of parts cracking when ejecting from the mold, as well as reject levels. And as parts are tougher, this lowers the risk of rejects on handling during manufacturing.

Parts designed with snap fits are particularly sensitive during molding and assembly – which is where the greater ductility of polyamide 6 makes it the preferred material.

Akulon Ultraflow

Akulon Ultraflow is our high-flow portfolio with up to 80% better flow rate than standard polyamide 6 materials. And manufacturers can exploit these advantages even further through cycle time reductions of up to 40% - with no significant effect on mechanical properties compared to standard polyamide 6 grades.
