DSM Engineering Plastics

Arnitel® offers a broad range of properties from chemical and heat resistance to excellent elasticity and permeability.

Powerful properties

Arnitel® offers a unique range of properties including chemical and thermal resistance, flame retardance – and excellent mechanical properties. All of which make it ideal for a very broad range of applications from automotive to consumer and leisure to electronics and electrical.

Arnitel is a thermoplastic elastomer. As such it combines the easy process of Thermoplastics with the elasticity of a rubber. Especially the soft Arnitels show excellent elasticity and can be e.g. used as elastic fibers.

Thermal properties

Arnitel is extensively used in applications over a very wide range of temperatures. Arnitel retains its mechanical properties at very low temperatures of -45°C right up to 150°C. Arnitel is the material of choice when it comes to life saving applications at critically low temperatures.

Yield stress

In automotive pneumatic tube and hose applications such as air brake tubing, pneumatic tubing and air-ducts for turbo chargers, an important requirement is a high burst pressure at under the hood temperatures.

Burst pressure is related to the yield stress of the material. Arnitel can withstand very high burst pressures and retains its properties better at higher temperatures than competitive materials such as PA12.

Fungus resistance

Arnitel is not attached by fungae easily, while many TPUs show this problem. This makes Arnitle and excellent choice for outdoor applications.

Heat ageing

Arnitel E types show a good resistance in heat ageing tests. The Arnitel C series shows outstanding heat ageing properties. These materials meet the severe ISO 6277 class D requirements for automotive wire and cable.

Fatigue resistance

Arnitel has out-standing resistance to flexural fatigue both at high temperatures and sub-zero temperatures. This makes it really well suited to applications like constant velocity boots, and rack and pinion bellows – which are subjected to temperatures from as low as -45°C to as high of 150°C, as well as encountering very high levels of flexural fatigue.

Chemical resistance

Arnitel has very good chemical resistance, especially to automotive greases and oils – which of course makes it ideal for related applications. This is especially true for components that have to perform at high temperatures, like cable ties, fuel lines, and hydraulic tubes and hoses.

Arnitel also has very good chemical resistance against household chemicals, like cleaning agents, sunscreen lotion, etc.

UV resistance

Arnitel is the choice of nature in outdoor applications where UV resistance and color protection are key. While competitor materials like TPU show yellowing very fast, Arnitel materials typically keep their original colour much longer. To combat extreme exposure we’ve also developed a special master batch grades which boost performance even further.

Membrane permeability

From the world of construction to the medical, textile, packaging industries, there is growing demand for high-tech films and coatings that combine a number of properties including flexibility, elasticity, and permeability to water vapor, chemical resistance and thermal resistance. Arnitel delivers on all counts.

CO2/O2 permselectivity

Arnitel shows a very high O2 permeability combined with a very high CO2 permeability. This leads to high CO2/O2 permselectivity, which enables Arnitel films to be used for fruit and vegetable packaging, where special environments are necessary to enlarge the shelf life of the fruit and vegetables of interest.

Arnitel can be over-molded on other plastics to give a soft-touch feel combined with good mechanical properties, and for enhancing grip to improve torsion transport. Overmolding with Arnitel is also used for sound dampening applications such as in door latches. Overmolding can be easily achieved by injection molding on molded components which are designed with ribs, grooves, etc which act as under-cuts that the overmolding can hold on to.

Arnitel can also be coextruded with other materials to give multilayer film. DSM has also a new adhesion grade in the portfolio to enable coextrusion with polyamides.
