RAST connectors

Thanks to its good balance of heat resistance, electrical performance and glow wire ignition capability, our ForTii is increasingly being recognized as the ideal solution for tightly regulated SMT white goods connectors.

At DSM we’re the first supplier to offer a solution for the SMT RAST connector – offering a broad range of properties from good dimensional stability to good strength, to outstanding electrical properties to a robust UL 94 V-0 flammability rating.

 

That’s why when STOCKO Contact - one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of electro-mechanical components - introduced a SMT RAST connector for use in domestic appliance engineering, it chose ForTii.

The unique properties of ForTii in this application include its reflow soldering ability, which (way superior to PPA), very high pin retention values (better than LCPs) stable and fast processing, very good electrical properties (CTI 600V), low moisture uptake, and proven lower corrosion on molding equipment.

Terminal blocks

Terminal blocks, a removable electrical connection are used in nearly every market, preferably in industrial applications. Originally used only in the electric field, terminal blocks are used today increasingly also in electronics as an alternative for connectors or as a hybrid terminal block connector acting as an interface for data power and signal inputs or outputs.

Since power connections can easily go up to several 100 Amperes, very robust and reliable plastic housings materials are required to meeting these stringent requirements. Terminal block solutions are cable to board connections that offer the advantage, that every single connection can be re-addressed.

 

Specific ForTii compounds have been developed meeting the most stringent requirements of Terminal Blocks:

  • Best in class electrical performance (such as CTI 600V);
  • Ready to use agency approval (VDE and KEMA);
  • High mechanical performance;
  • Excellent environmental ageing performane (such as stress cracking);
  • JEDEC1 lead free reflow soldering.

I/O Connectors

ForTii gives manufacturers a range of benefits in I/O connectors, including high mechanical strength, high flow capability, easier colorability and stability, and competitive cost versus halogen-free PPAs and LCP.

It has much higher weld-line strength and is generally tougher and less prone to crack, while the housing deformation is lower, especially after reflow.

To support our customers in the best possible way, we are offering our entire portfolio both in halogen containing as well as halogen free compounds. This way you can choose the best solution and adjust a switchover to halogen free to your needs.

Memory Card Connectors

ForTii offers advantages over competing materials for Memory Card Connectors. Its high flow and weld line strength enable lead free resoldering at lower warpage with less blistering of the thin walls compared to LCPs – all the while offering comparable cycle times.

It’s also lighter than many competitive materials – 10-25% lower weight than LCPs.

FPC connectors

For Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) connectors, ForTii offers benefits over PPS, PPAs and LCPs, including higher weld line strength, better toughness and lower warpage after reflow.

Specifically ForTii offers high flow (outperforming any PPA) and weld line strength which means less cracking compared to LCPs – and the lowest warpage after reflow compared to LCPs, but with similar cycle time.

The material has very high retention to strength (it’s toughness outperforms any LCP in flexural strength) yet it weighs less than competitive materials – in fact it's 10-25% lighter than any LCP.

DDR/Memory socket

Memory sockets made with ForTii deliver on all fronts, unlike competitive products such as LCP, PPA – which lack at least one of these key properties.

ForTii offers higher weld line strength, toughness, lower warpage after reflow, high pin retention forces and full color ability and with no compromise on cycle times. What’s more, ForTii is the only material that is already qualified by all leading connector manufacturer. OEMs have not only the opportunity to be move towards the higher speed DDR4, they also can access a full range of colors to differentiate and to enable easy distinguishing between adjacent memory module blocks.

Battery connectors

ForTii enables sockets with higher weld line strength, toughness and lower warpage after reflow than conventional materials like PPAs or LCPs.

Specifically it offers high flow (outperforms any PPA), weld line strength (compared to LCPs) and retention strength. This is coupled with very low warpage after molding reflow compared to LCPs with comparable cycle times – and all at lower weight (10% -25% lower than LCPs).

ForTii is tough, with higher flexural strength than any LCP, while offering high HDT, stiffness and Tg, ensuring an excellent co-planarity.

Power connectors

ForTii is ideally suited to power supply solutions in the telecom industry thanks primarily to its outstanding flame retardancy and ability to enable high driving voltages and/or high current density, even at thin walls; in fact it has the highest CTI class of 600 V.

The material’s outstanding thermal properties enable reflow soldering and thus the elimination of lead from the production process. This is combined with thinner, yet stronger component walls that are blister – and halogen – free.
