DSM Coating Resins

Making a splash in waterborne resins

Wonderful waterborne resins

Waterborne resin technology has gained real momentum in the coatings industry, and we’re proud to have been there from the start. While waterborne coatings contain around eight times fewer VOCs than traditional solventborne equivalents, the greatest scientific challenge – beyond making them even more sustainable – is how to achieve this without compromising performance or cost efficiency.

At DSM, we’re making real progress here – in waterborne alkyds, urethanes, acrylics and urethane-acrylic hybrids. For example, in Asia, where we chair the Waterborne China Platform (WBCP), we’ve helped the entire industrial container market to make the transition from solventborne to waterborne coatings. In years to come, we expect that steady trickle of converts to become a stream.

Waterborne alkyds

Our waterborne alkyd resins for paints and coatings in the decorative market are solvent-free, with good drying times, high-gloss retention, and with good open times and leveling. Alkyd emulsions are the godfather of the industry; the team at DSM has been developing this technology for decades, and we don’t intend to stop anytime soon.

Waterborne urethanes

Our waterborne urethane resins are super tough, with outstanding mechanical resistance – ideal for both traditional parquet floors and the new generation of flexible flooring, as well as for hard-wearing packaging coatings. At DSM, we make urethanes that can be applied ‘in situ’. They are based on so-called ‘self-cross-linkable’ chemistry – which delivers higher resistance levels in the coating. Our waterborne urethane resins offer a broad platform of technologies: alkyd urethanes, UV curable urethanes, and feel-coating urethanes – all unlocking a world of tactile opportunities and experiences. For example, through Skins® – our family of haptic-effect coatings.

Waterborne urethane acrylics

Our waterborne urethane acrylic resins combine some of the strong mechanical properties of urethanes with the high resistance levels of acrylics, offering the best of both worlds. In general, these resins are ideal, and economical, solutions for industrial applications where a high line speed is essential; and industrial flooring applications where quick drying times and fast return-to-service are crucial.

Waterborne acrylics

Our waterborne acrylic resins continue to evolve in terms of their coating performance. A major reason behind this is the fact that our technical team has unique control over particle size, morphology, functionality, chemical composition, and molecular weight – which, in turn, gives our customers huge flexibility and versatility in developing everything from paints to inks and varnishes. Our acrylic emulsion resins are fast drying, offer good durability, and are resistant to pretty much anything thrown at them.
