DSM in Personal Care & Aroma Ingredients

ALPAFLOR® and Sustainability

Developed in accordance with the principles of biodiversity, sustainability and fair trade, ALPAFLOR® is a DSM People+ product line, meaning we consider it to have a better impact on people’s lives than comparable rival products.
ALPAFLOR® and Sustainability

Located in the Swiss canton of Valais, in an increasingly uncommon environment of nature and purity, the ALPAFLOR® production site focuses on the organic cultivation of, and extraction from, specific and rare alpine plants.

It is an excellent illustration of sustainability in action through the entire supply chain and perfectly exemplifies DSM’s core sustainability values of People, Planet and Profit.

Take our ALPAFLOR® EDELWEISS extract, developed exclusively to meet the needs of the cosmetics industry. Its benefits to people are threefold, helping consumers, employees and the local community:

  • Primarily, as an effective natural ingredient in all kinds of skin care products, including sun care and after-sun products, as well as day care products, ALPAFLOR® EDELWEISS benefits people by providing outstanding care for stressed and sensitive skin. In addition, the bioactive itself and the production methods used meet the highest quality and safety standards for organic cosmetics. They therefore satisfy people’s desire for more natural, sustainable personal care products.
  • We apply Fair Trade principles to cooperation with the community of Swiss mountain farmers who grow our plants, many of whom face severe economic difficulties that threaten their way of life and force them to migrate into the valleys.

Organic cultivation of the plants for ALPAFLOR® EDELWEISS protects natural sites against wild harvesting, helping to preserve the biodiversity of Alpine flora as well as ensuring a sustainable supply of botanically and chemically well defined plants of the highest quality.

Organic cultivation further guarantees the protection of soil and groundwater against chemical pollution, while new manufacturing processes have led to a 40% reduction in water use over the whole ALPAFLOR® product range since 2007.

Our highly potent variety of edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum ‘Helvetia’) has an exceptionally high content of active ingredients which reduces the cost of raw materials – an efficiency that directly benefits our customers.

Moreover, with natural and organic cosmetics now moving from a niche market to the mainstream and currently registering annual double-digit growth rates, the ALPAFLOR® range represents an area of outstanding potential for sustainable development – for the benefit of all.
