DSM in Personal Care

A mindful approach to beauty and personal care

Beauty care for a moment of calm in a busy world

Trying to keep up with the ever-increasing pace and pressures of modern life can be physically, mentally and emotionally draining. In urban areas, the tempo can be particularly relentless and with 55% of the world’s population now living in cities1 it’s no surprise that many consumers are looking for ways to take a step back and to pay attention to their  holistic well-being. The concept and practice of mindfulness has moved from alternative to mainstream, so how can beauty and personal care ingredients help consumers live in the moment?

There is evidence that the very act of doing something to nurture the skin can be beneficial, because it involves taking a little bit of time for ourselves. When people are busy though they also want to feel confident that every moment they take to unwind and relax is time well spent.

The appeal of Mindful Beauty

DSM’s latest research has found that the Mindful Beauty trend can be articulated in two types of trend expressions:

  • Experiencing Beauty: In our time-scarce society, experiences have become the new luxury.  So some consumers are using their personal care routines for a moment of enjoyment and escape.  For these people, it’s all about pleasant-to-use textures, a multi-sensory treat, and the ritual involved in applying products.
  • Inner Balance: With many people multi-tasking their way through life, it’s easy to feel out of control, creating “lifestyle stress”, i.e. emotional stress experienced as a result of our hectic lifestyle. This stress has a negative physical impact on our body and skin, and consumers seek products and solutions to counter this impact, to soothe and to re-energize. More>

Holistic needs call for holistic solutions. This is why DSM offers a line-up of ready-to-use formulations for consumers who want to put ‘mindful and inner balance’ at the centre of their beauty regime.
