Beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A, is mainly used in the treatment of conditions associated with vitamin A deficiency. Beta-carotene is used orally to reduce the photosensitivity reactions in patients with erythropoietic protoporphyria. More therapeutic uses of beta-carotene are reported within clinical research and these include cardiovascular diseases, asthma, AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer.
