Case Study: PGS with Dyneema®

To capture the world's most reliable seismic data, PGS goes to any length.

Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS) operates a fleet of some 20 vessels operating in the roughest seas, and serving the offshore oil and gas industry.

The Norwegian operator’s ability to produce higher resolution data is dependent on its ability to tow heavier and denser seismic sensors – which is why it uses ropes made with Dyneema®. The weight reduction and low diameter enable PGS to fit greater lengths of rope onto existing winches, controlling costs like fuel usage.

“Ropes made with Dyneema® proved to be very strong, light weight, and resistant to harsh environments,” said Brad Bertsch, PGS’s Mechanical Supervisor. “They can be easily spliced, have very little creep, have very low elasticity and are resistant to chemicals and corrosion. And they are easy on our ships’ equipment, sheaves, and winches.” He also points out that Dyneema®’s ability to float has been another major advantage over steel cable.
