On 4 November, Reverdia, the joint venture between DSM and Roquette Frères that produces Biosuccinium™ (succinic acid), the first non-fossil feedstock derived chemical building block, topped the Biofuels Digest 40 Hottest Emerging Companies in the Advanced Bioeconomy 2016-17.

ESI Excellence Europe
On 25 October DSM was reconfirmed as a constituent of the Ethibel Sustainability Index (ESI) Excellence Europe. The ESI Excellence Europe contains shares of 200 European companies that are included in the Russell Global Index that display the best performance in terms of corporate social responsibility (CSR).
DSM named in Carbon Disclosure Project 'Climate A List'
DSM has been identified as a global leader for its actions and strategies in response to climate change and has been awarded a position on the Climate A List by CDP, the international not-for-profit that drives sustainable economies. 193 “A Listers” appear on the list, which has been produced at the request of 827 investors with assets of US$100 trillion
DSM wins Ethical Corporation Responsible Business Awards
On 30 September DSM’s Science Can Change the World campaign won in the Best Communication category at the Ethical Corporation Responsible Business Awards 2016. DSM was also ‘highly commended’ in the Best Sustainable Company category. The Awards recognize genuine, truly innovative and meaningful approaches to making responsible business a reality.
DSM named leader in Dow Jones Sustainability World Index
On 8 September DSM was named the worldwide leader in the Materials industry group in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index. DSM has consistently been recognized for integrating sustainability into its business, having been named among the global leaders in each of the last 13 years and holding the number one position in the sector seven times.
Fortune Change the World List
In August 2016 Fortune Magazine revealed that DSM was included in its second annual Change the World List which highlights the 50 leading companies that are innovating to solve the world’s biggest challenges through core profit-making strategy and operations.
DSM again FTSE4Good Index constituent
DSM is again featured in the FTSE4Good Index. This international sustainability index is designed to measure the performance of companies demonstrating strong Environmental, Social and Governance practices. DSM has a maximum score of 100.
Company Communications Team of the Year Award
On 7th July at the annual European Association of Communication Directors (EACD) Summit in Brussels, DSM’s Communications and Branding Team won the ‘Company Communications Team of the Year Award 2016’ in recognition of the success of its 'Unsung Heroes of Science' campaign. The award is an initiative of the EACD – the leading network of European communication professionals – to applaud communication excellence.
Deauville Green Awards
On Thursday 16th June at the 5th Deauville Green Awards - an international festival of film productions focusing on sustainability and eco-innovations - DSM's 'Unsung Heroes of Science' movie was recognized with the 'Gold Green Award' in the 'Innovations and technological leaps' category, rewarding excellence in production and broadcasting for sustainable development.
Webranking by Comprend
“Webranking” is Europe’s leading survey of corporate websites and evaluates how well companies in the FT Europe 500 are meeting the growing expectations of stakeholders in terms of transparency and dialogue. In 2015/16 DSM leapt from 32nd to 11th place and for the 5th successive year was the leading Dutch company in the FT-500. DSM was also 2nd place in the highest performing Chemicals Sector behind Bayer and 5 places above BASF.
New York Festivals
At the New York Festivals Best TV & Films 2016 ceremony in April 2016, DSM's 'Unsung Heroes of Science' movie was recognized with Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals in the Corporate Social Responsibility, Public Relations and Internal Film categories respectively.
Global 100 Index
Each year Corporate Knights publish a Global 100 Index of the most sustainable corporations in the world. In the 2016 Index published on 20 January, DSM was the highest ranked chemical company and 23rd overall. Those featured are considered leaders in transparency, in resource productivity and on a range of other social and governance indicators.
Fortune Award for Circular Economy Leadership
On 19 January during the World Economic Forum, DSM's CEO, Feike Sijbesma, was jointly awarded the Fortune Award for Circular Economy Leadership in recognition of his role in spearheading DSM’s circular economy strategy and its groundbreaking research into fossil fuel substitutes. His fellow recipient was Professor Dajian Zhu of Tongji University, Shanghai for his role in shifting the attitudes of business and policy leaders on circular economy eco-design models throughout China.
Singapore Sustainable Business Awards
On 3 November DSM was recognized as Overall Winner of the Singapore Sustainable Business Awards (SBA). DSM received the award for its commitment to sustainability and for creating value for people, planet and profit throughout its supply chain. DSM also won awards in Supply Chain Management and Climate Change.
DSM wins two Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards
At the prestigious Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards held on 15 October, DSM was honored with Silver Dolphin Awards in two categories. The short film ‘The Unsung Heroes of Science’, produced by DSM as part of its Science Can Change The World campaign championing inspirational scientists, won silver in the Corporate Films category and ‘Hidden Hunger’, produced by DSM's Nutrition Improvement Program as part of its work raising awareness of global micronutrient deficiency, in the Informational Films category.
DSM receives CEFIC European Responsible Care Award
On 9 October CEFIC announced DSM had won the environment category at this year’s European Responsible Care Awards in recognition of DSM’s success in implementing a sustainability program at its Dalry facility located on the west coast of Scotland. Based on 2010 data for the Dalry site, the sustainability program introduced by DSM has had a significant impact, achieving and even exceeding its targets in some areas.
CDP Quarterly Sector Research
In August 2015 CDP, the NGO dedicated to collating data on listed firms' environmental performance, published a new report on the carbon disclosure record of 18 global chemical firms. The research ranked the companies, representing over $500bn in market cap, on seven categories, including product innovation, energy efficiency, water risk and carbon regulation, resulting in DSM being ranked in 2nd place behind DuPont.
IFANCA 'Company of the Year'
In March DSM was named ‘Company of the Year’ by the Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America (IFANCA) in recognition of DSM’s outstanding Halal compliance, implementation and program of label control for Halal logo and markings and our commitment to supporting the growing requirements of the international food industry with global Halal programs and ingredients that are suitable for Halal products.
CII-ITC Sustainability Awards
In December DSM was recognized by the Confederation of Indian Industry’s CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development for its innovative approach, including policy and practice, to reduce DSM’s environmental impact and achieve exemplary results.
ITMA Future Materials Awards 2014
In late November at the ITMA Future Materials Awards DSM was recognized with 3 awards based on its Dyneema® Force Multiplier Technology platform; Best Innovation – Industrial Textiles, Most Innovative Large Company and Launch of the Year.
SPE Innovation Award
In November DSM received the Society of Plastics Engineers Automotive Division Innovation Award in recognition of the numerous environmental and economic advantages of the new crankshaft cover in Volkswagen Group diesel engines manufactured from DSM’s bio-based polymer, EcoPaXX®.
Singapore Sustainability Award 2014
In October DSM was recognized with a Singapore Sustainability Award in the prestigious Sustainable Business category. The awards showcase the most innovative and impactful sustainable practices and green solutions among organizations in the country.
Growth Excellence Leadership Award
In August DSM received Frost & Sullivan's Growth Excellence Leadership Award for Medical Device Coatings. According to Frost & Sullivan, DSM’s customer-centric strategies are one of the key ingredients to its success. Coupled with its cross-functional expertise and commitment to value-added partnerships and acquisitions, DSM is well positioned to remain the “total solutions provider” to the medical device coatings market.
Customer Value Leadership Award
In June DSM received the 2014 Europe Frost & Sullivan Award for Customer Value Leadership for its work in enhancing value for Tier 1 suppliers of passenger car steering systems by establishing a new benchmark in weight reduction.
DSM's Maxipro wins 2nd Innovation Award
On 14 May at Frost & Sullivan's Best Practices Awards Banquet, DSM's Maxipro HSP, a unique protease able to extract valuable protein from existing animal by-products was recognized with an Innovation of the Year by the organizers. This is the 2nd such award given recently to Maxipro HSP.
Dutch Food Top 100’s Social Media Award
On 6 May DSM was presented with the EVMI Dutch Food Top 100’s Social Media Award. DSM was praised for its consistency across all channels, the integration with its websites, the use of local channels and responsiveness.
‘Breakthrough Technology of the Year’
On 5 March DSM’s advanced cellulosic yeast product was named the ‘Breakthrough Technology of the Year’ at Green Power’s Sustainable Bio Awards, presented during World Bio Markets 2014 Conference. The award recognizes a “technology that resets the goal for bio-based production.” DSM’s advanced cellulosic yeast product recently achieved successful scale-up in an industrial production-sized trial at DONG Energy’s Inbicon demonstration plant in Kalundborg, Denmark.
DSM wins Marketing Award
On 16 January DSM was presented with the Netherlands Institute of Marketing’s (NIMA) Marketing Award 2013 for best Marketing Company in the Netherlands. This is the first time a B2B company has received this recognition. According to the jury “DSM has successfully transformed itself from a chemical giant to a specialized multinational that translates technology into value propositions in the areas of health, nutrition and materials”. Other contenders for the award were KLM and Bol.com.
Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health awards Dean’s Medal to DSM
On 3 December 2013 Stephan Tanda of DSM’s Managing Board was on hand to receive the Dean of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Medal. The Dean’s Medal is the School’s highest honor and was presented to DSM in recognition of its global corporate leadership in efforts to mitigate food insecurity, prevent hidden hunger and promote sustainable development in low-income countries. This is the first time in its history that the Dean’s Medal has been awarded to an organization rather than an individual.
DSM wins Erasmus Innovation Award 2013
On 27 November 2013 DSM was recognized for the for the successful transformation of the company by winning the Erasmus Innovation Award 2013 at the Annual INSCOPE Conference. Receiving the award, DSM's Chief Innovation Officer, Rob van Leen said "This external recognition that innovation is in our company’s genes fills me with pride. I am happy to accept this award on behalf of the many thousand people who daily work on our innovations at DSM.”
Maxipro HSP wins Savoury/Meat Innovation of the Year award at the Food Ingredients Excellence Awards 2013
In November 2013 DSM was the proud winner of the Savoury/Meat Innovation of the Year award at the Food Ingredients Excellence Awards 2013. Our innovative enzyme Maxipro HSP is a unique protease that is able to extract valuable protein from existing animal by-products, thereby offering the world a sustainable, tasty and cost-effective extra source of protein. Calculations show that if all pork and beef blood would be available for human consumption, an additional 65 million people could meet their protein need for a full year.
Rob van Leen named 'Innovator of the Year'
On 8 November 2013 DSM's Chief Innovation Officer, Rob van Leen, was named 'Innovator of the Year' by Accenture. This year, the award was presented for the first time to the person ‘who has made an extraordinary contribution to innovation in The Netherlands over the past few years’.
Bio-based Deal of the Year
POET-DSM Advanced Biofuels, the joint venture between DSM and the U.S.-based POET, was named the ‘Bio-based Deal of the Year’ on 29 October 2013. The award recognizes “a deal that is of particular relevance for the long-term development of the bio-based industries.”
DSM is hot!
In October 2013 DSM received top 10 honors in Biofuels Digest’s prestigious ‘50 Hottest Companies In Bioenergy’ and ‘30 Hottest In Renewable Chemicals’ polls, finishing in 10th and 7th place respectively.The polls are based on votes by biofuels and bio-chemical industry professionals.
OatWell® oat beta-glucan wins industry award
DSM’s heart health ingredient OatWell oat beta-glucan has been named one of the most innovative products of the year at the prestigious Food Ingredients South America (FiSA) Awards 2013 held in August.
Dyneema® wins coveted Soldier Technology Award
In June 2013 DSM's ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber, Dyneema, was named the winner of the Soldier Technology Award’s Best Light-Weight Protective Product for the Soldier category.
DSM's CEO joins Global CEO Council to support Chinese leadership on innovation, urbanization and sustainability
In June 2013 Feike Sijbesma, DSM's CEO, joined the Global CEO Council (GCC) of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC). This prestigious committee, consisting of 14 CEO’s from global, leading multinational companies, will support the Chinese leadership, on several topics, including innovation, urbanization and sustainability.
DSM honored with ‘Human Nutrition Innovation Award’ by Chinese Nutrition Society
In May 2013 DSM was recognized by the Chinese Nutrition Society for its outstanding contribution to nutritional science by constantly enhancing and improving human nutrition and the strong support it offers to the academic community in product development and applications. DSM was also acknowledged for its excellent contribution to providing innovative nutritional solutions to meet the needs of specific groups.
DSM wins the Global Deal and Global Partnership 2013 categories at the Sustainable Biofuels Awards 2013
On 13th March 2013 at the prestigious Sustainable Biofuels Awards 2013 ceremony held in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, DSM and its joint venture partners were presented with awards in two categories; the Global Deal of the Year (POET-DSM Advanced Biofuels) and the Partnership of the Year (Reverdia).
DSM's CEO awarded honorary doctorate
In January 2013 the University of Maastricht (the Netherlands) conferred DSM's CEO, Feike Sijbesma, with an honorary doctorate. Receiving the award, Feike said "DSM, the company I represent, and to whom in fact my honorary doctorate belongs, is using and developing technologies, based on scientific work, to address the global challenges I mentioned with a strong conviction that we need to contribute and create value for all stakeholders, based on the company's core value, sustainability."
DSM wins Corporate Steward Award 2012
On 6 December the US Chamber of Commerce announced that DSM had been awarded its Corporate Steward Award 2012. The award is in recognition of DSM's integrated Triple P (People, Planet, Profit) approach to creating a sustainable business and shared value with all stakeholders. Past winners include Kraft Foods, Intel, Microsoft and Merck.
DSM’s sustainable supply chain management recognized
On 28 November 2012 DSM announced that it had been awarded the Sustainable Supply Chain Award 2012 for its responsible way of managing its supply chain. The prize was awarded by the VBDO, the Dutch Association of Investors for Sustainable Development.
Fruitflow® receives top industry accolade at FiSA 2012
DSM’s Fruitflow was named one of the most innovative products of the year at the prestigious Food Ingredients South America Awards 2012. Fruitflow works in synergy with the body to prevent blood platelet aggregation, a ‘stickiness’ or ‘spikiness’ of the blood platelets which can lead to blood clots. A natural and safe ingredient, Fruitflow does not disrupt the blood clotting process required following injury.
Pack-Age™ wins prestigious packaging award
In October 2012 DSM’s Pack-Age was awarded Bronze at one of the world’s most competitive packaging innovation contests, ‘De Gouden Noot’. Pack-Age, an innovative film, improves the ripening of cheese, increases its shelf life and reduces the product losses.
Arnitel® Eco wins honorable mention in Material of the Year Award
DSM's Arnitel Eco, a partly bio-based thermoplastic copolyester elastomer (TPC) has won an honorable mention in the 2012 Material ConneXion Material of the Year Award. Arnitel Eco is partially derived from rapeseed oil and offers superior performance characteristics, allowing end-users to reduce their carbon footprint by switching from petrochemical-based TPC elastomers.
Brazilian Bioenergy Deal Award includes DSM
GraalBio in conjunction with its suppliers, including DSM, was presented with the Brazilian Bioenergy Deal of the Year Award for 2012 on 18 September in São Paulo, Brazil. The award recognizes the initiative to launch commercial scale production of cellulosic ethanol in Brazil by 2013.
DSM receives Sustainability Awards from SAM
On 11 June 2012, DSM received two Sustainability Awards from investment fund SAM, based on SAM’s yearly corporate sustainability assessment. The awards represent recognition for DSM’s Gold status and for being Sustainability Leader in the Chemical Sector of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index.
DSM tops Dutch Webranking for the first time
In KWD Webranking’s 2011-2012 annual survey of 950 corporate websites in 40 countries, including the 27 largest companies by market cap in the Netherlands, DSM tops the list of AEX-listed companies for the first time. According to KWD, DSM’s website scored particularly highly for the insight it provides into the company’s growth factors, financial targets and social responsibility endeavors.
DSM’s re-branding program recognized
On 22 March 2012 at the Transform Awards 2012, a European award recognizing excellence in rebranding, DSM won gold in the ‘Internal Communication of a Rebrand’ category. The judging panel particularly applauded the good combination of strategy and creativity with which the DSM brand was launched with global cinema events and a movie.
