In R&D we practice 98% of prevailing chemistries and create many active ingredients and intermediates. In route-scouting and green chemistry our unique convergence of biocatalysis and chemocatalysis (through our Innosyn™ brand) is finding faster routes to new drug compounds with more renewable starter materials.
On the production side our Green Chemistry Toolbox, including Micro Reactors, is increasing productivity - drastically cutting waste and our customers’ carbon footprint.
In Finished dosage
With more drugs than ever coming off patent, there’s a greater need for efficiency and sustainability. We currently fill or freeze-dry two of the top five biotech products on the market and launch an average 25 products every year for our customers. We also make and package the end product through a wide range of dosage forms including tablets, capsules, ointments, creams and liquids.

In Microbial fermentation
DSM has more than 100 years’ experience in fermentation-based technologies. We cover many microorganisms through a multitude of products ranging from complex metabolites like anti-infectives, to bioactive proteins (enzymes and pharmaceutical proteins).
In Anti-Infectives
We are one of the world’s largest providers of antibiotic active ingredients based on penicillin. Our beta lactam-based anti-infectives combat deadly infectious diseases all over the world – to the tune of half a billion treatments.
We’re also one of the greenest producers. Our DSMPureActives™ brand is a family of active ingredients produced in such a way that energy consumption has been cut up to two-thirds; up to 90% less waste is produced and harmful emissions are cut by 50%. But just as importantly, the purity of our DSMPureActives™ offers advantages for our direct customers who convert our active ingredients into finished dosage forms, which in turn help cure the infectious diseases of patients.
