Emergency and therapeutic foods are life-saving nutritional solutions that provide quick and reliable access to vital nourishment for those in need – especially children. Therapeutic foods are used to feed people of all ages in emergency situations, malnourished children and those with special nutritional requirements (such as people living with HIV) who are at an increased risk of death from malnourishment.[1] Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) provides a mixture of nutrients designed to primarily address severe acute malnutrition without complications.

Used in both clinical and home settings, RUTFs are homogenous mixes of ingredients including protein sources like peanuts, oil, sugar, milk powder, and vitamin and mineral supplements. 7 RUTFs like Plumpy'Nut have revolutionized the treatment of serve acute malnutrition among infants and children since early 2000s.8,9
Aimed at the prevention and treatment of moderate to acute malnutrition in situations such as seasonal lean periods, RUSFs come in convenient daily dose sachets for home use. These are typically made with heat treated oilseeds, pulses or cereals, along with sugar, milk powder, vegetable oils, vitamins, and minerals.11
