Reducing Landfill Mass One Bag at a Time

Sustainability and reducing environmental impact are at the forefront of many conversations we at dsm-firmenich are having today – both within our company and with our valued customers. In an effort to help meet dsm-firmenich’s sustainability goal of an absolute landfill waste reduction of 50% by 2030, we recently announced an initiative to include batch overage bags with each customer delivery beginning with batches produced after August 1, 2023.

Since 2020, dsm-firmenich has achieved a 42% reduction in total landfill mass. While we are proud of these results, we must take additional steps to further reduce our landfill burden through focused continuous improvement efforts.

Through internal process reviews we determined that a primary source of this landfill mass is the wasting of blended final product produced over the target batch weight. Rather than send this extra amount to the landfill, we will provide this “overage” to our customers going forward. Customers can expect to receive 1 bag of product or less with each unique batch number.

This process has been underway at our Ayr Premix Plant in Ontario, Canada, where we’ve seen significant waste reduction and received positive feedback from our customers. We’re excited to bring it to our additional premix plants in Ames, IA, Pendergrass, GA, and Ft. Worth, TX. Watch more about this initiative in our Ayr plant.

In early June, customers received a letter outlining this initiative and next steps. For additional information or questions, please reach out to your dsm-firmenich customer care specialist.
