The Importance of Vitamin D

All animals need a strong skeleton, which is important for longevity, production, welfare and product quality. Hy•D® delivers stronger skeletons effectively.

Vitamin D3 is essential for developing robust bones. It regulates the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, which both play a critical role in bone calcification.

The Difference

When vitamin D3 is fed in the diet, it has to go through two changes before it reaches the form that can be utilized by the animal. This process reduces the effective amount of vitamin D3 available to the animal and is time-consuming.

Feeding Hy•D® allows the first of these stages to be bypassed. The result is more efficient and faster uptake of the required metabolite 25-OH D3, meaning stronger skeletons and healthier, more productive animals.

Hy•D® delivers significant benefits in poultry and swine production, which cannot be achieved by feeding D3 alone.

Form

Hy•D® is supplied as a spray-dried beadlet using DSM’s patented technology. This gives a more uniform, better-flowing product with outstanding mixing properties. It is stable when included in premixes and pelleted feeds under standard conditions up to 90°C.

Hy•D™ is the 25-OH D3 standard

The numbers don’t lie. Not all 25-OH D3 are created equal.

When it comes to 25-OH D3, there are many misperceptions in the poultry industry. One of the most common, and costly, misperceptions is that other products are equivalent to the industry standard.

Hy•D™ continues to set the standard for purity, bioavailability and performance. It’s the only 25-OH D3 in compliance with specifications in FDA regulations and the only pure form on the market today.

Hy•D™ is approved for broilers, turkeys, layers, pullets and broiler breeders.

Purest Form

Made from a single ingredient with no other metabolites.

Improves FCR

Delivers better feed conversion than any other 25-OH D3.

Immune Function

Supports healthy immune function.

Birds fed Hy•D™ outperform the others.

The numbers don't lie.1 Hy•D™ birds outperformed the “Other 25-OH D3” in feed conversion ratio (FCR) in every customer scenario, and showed consistent improvement in yield compared to the birds with no 25-OH D3.

See for yourself in this analysis of a year’s worth of data from Agri Stats comparing Hy•D™ and the “Other 25-OH D3."

Hy•D™ helps you get the most ROI for your operation.

The recommended feeding rate for 25-OH D3 is 62.5 mg based on all the chicken studies2 that DSM has conducted to obtain the best ROI and animal performance. Studies also show 62.5 mg is the dose level necessary to achieve optimal performance for bone and muscle development in chickens. And, at 45% lower cost per milligram 25-OH D3, you can be sure you’re getting the performance results you want with cost in mind.

Help your gilts and sows stand strong with Hy•D™

Optimize skeletal development, bone health and mobility for higher performing pigs.

Hy•D™ is a Vitamin D innovation that improves skeletal development and bone health, enhancing sow lifetime productivity. It is a pure and proprietary vitamin D metabolite called 25-OH D3, the circulating form of D3. Its unique chemical form eliminates the need for conversion of D3 in the liver, allowing 25-OH D3 to be absorbed more efficiently and consistently throughout a pig’s lifetime.

Improved Skeletal Development

Strengthens skeletal frames, reducing culling rates.

Reduced Farrowing Difficulties

Lessens the need for farrowing interventions.

Heavier Birth and Weaning Weights

Supports more efficient nutrient absorption.

Get greater sow longevity and productivity.

Lifetime productivity is a function of the sow’s genetic potential as well as her duration in the reproductive herd. Maintaining productive capacity over successive parities is fundamental to sow-herd profitability. The cost of gilt and sow development isn’t covered until their 3rd or 4th parity, and those that aren’t “paying for themselves” add costs to weaned pigs.

Industry experts encourage producers to measure sow productivity based on the number of pigs born alive or weaned throughout a sow’s lifetime. Fundamental to impacting these metrics is a producer’s ability to maintain optimum vitamin D levels in the breeding herd, which is essential for better bone health and ultimately reduced culling rates among first litter gilts and parity 1 sows. Hy•D™ can help animals maintain their structural soundness, resulting in greater longevity and lifetime productivity.

Produce more viable, higher performing pigs over a sow’s lifetime.

Longevity in the sow herd leads to increased productivity and profitability, and this starts with gilt development. Feeding Hy•D™ during gestation and lactation reduces the need for farrowing interventions and the frequency of post-farrowing complications. In addition, feeding Hy•D™ over two reproductive cycles results in heavier pig weights at birth and weaning.3

When added to the normal levels of vitamin D, Hy•D™ reduced the incidence and severity of osteochrondrosis (bone) lesions and improved gilt selection rates, based on mobility and structural soundness scores compared to vitamin D alone.1,2

Help pigs metabolize Vitamin D more efficiently.

When vitamin D is fed in the diet, it must go through two changes before it reaches the form that can be utilized by the animal. Inefficiencies in the first process reduce the effective amount of vitamin D available to the animal.

Feeding Hy•D™ allows the first stage to be skipped, ensuring optimal levels for utilization compared to traditional vitamin D coming from sunlight exposure, feed ingredients or vitamin D3 supplementation.

Hy•D® helps close the calcium gap in dairy cows

Get faster, more consistent absorption of calcium and phosphorus.Phibro Animal Health is the exclusive distributor for Hy-D in the U.S. dairy market. To learn more about Hy-D, talk to your local Phibro Dairy Advisor or visit the below sitewww.pahc.com/product_services/dairy-cattle/products/

Dairy cows make major metabolic adjustments in the transition phase in order to support lactation, mobilizing calcium from skeletal reserves and energy from adipose reserves. These adjustments must be timely for the cows to meet their nutrient requirements for peak milk production in early lactation.

Hy•D® is a pure and proprietary vitamin D3 metabolite that fast tracks the transition phase to give dairy cows better performance. It improves calcium management and lifetime productivity of dairy cows and it works better than supplementing with vitamin D3 alone.

Manage the calcium deficit in transitioning cows.

Today’s high producing dairy cow makes major metabolic adjustments in the transition phase in order to support a profitable lactation. During the first nine weeks of lactation alone, a cow may have a calcium deficit of 10 g/day1, resulting in a potential loss of around 10% of stored calcium that may not necessarily be regained.

While anionic salt programs have been introduced to help combat the calcium gap, even an effective anionic salt will result in approximately 4.5 g/day of calcium excreted in urine.2 Therefore, an anionic salt program alone may not be enough to close the gap.

Hy•D® is the only form of 25-OH D3 studied in the calcium metabolism of dairy cows and can make your DCAD program more effective.3 Choosing Hy•D® for your dairy herd nearly doubles the calcium and phosphorus retention compared to diets without it.4

Hy•D® is a more consistent solution for calcium management.

The unique mode of action of Hy•D® eliminates the need for conversion in the liver, thus directly providing the main circulating form of vitamin D. Including Hy•D® in a total mixed ration (TMR) allows for faster, more consistent absorption helping to close the calcium gap.4

Hy•D® improves vitamin D status for more productive cattle

Hy•D® for feedlot cattle receiving programs aids calcium and phosphorus absorption, and supports the immune system.

There are two main sources used to help provide vitamin D to cattle: sunlight and vitamin D3 supplementation. Sunlight alone is not sufficient and vitamin D3 effectiveness varies. Hy•D® is a pure and proprietary vitamin D metabolite that eliminates the need for conversion in the liver.

What does this mean for your cattle? Faster, more consistent absorption of vitamin D.
