dsm-firmenich PERFORMANCE SOLUTIONS

Ensuring adequate 25OHD3 level in blood serum

Sub-optimal Vitamin D3 levels in husbandry species such as poultry, swine and ruminants comprises animal health and reduces performance which leads to negative impacts on operating margins for animal protein producers. Our vitamin D3 dietary supplement ensures that optimal levels of Vitamin D3 are provided through the diet.

Delivering higher productivity in broilers and layers

The level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25OHD3) in blood serum indicates the vitamin status of a bird. Higher blood serum levels of 25OHD3 can deliver higher productivity in broilers and layers:

  • Two more live chicks per breeder housed
  • 10% stronger bones, leading to less lameness and greater productivity
  • 2% higher meat yield
  • Improved meat quality through reduction of ‘black bone’ syndrome (BBS)
  • 2% more eggs per layer cycle
  • 15% increase in saleable eggs through improved shell quality
  • Enhanced bird immunity, with heightened resilience to coccidiosis and a 20% reduction in shedding of cocci.

Supplementing the diet with our proprietary vitamin D3 metabolite Hy-D® supports optimal levels of 25OHD3 in blood serum, with all-round benefits for health, performance and productivity.

Improving the production performance index

Safely delivering a 2–3% increase in daily weight gain (DWG) and a 1–2% improvement in feed conversation ratio (FCR), Hy-D® lowers the cost of chicken production and delivers benefits throughout the value chain, from integrators to retailers. This state-of-the-art active form of vitamin D3 offers optimal stability in combination with optimal particle distribution, ensuring high bioavailability and greater production efficiency.

Form

Hy-D® is supplied as a spray-dried beadlet using dsm-firmenich’s patented technology. This gives a more uniform, better-flowing product with outstanding mixing properties. It is stable when included in premixes and pelleted feeds under standard conditions up to 90°C.

Hy-D® versus vitamin D3

Vitamin D is essential for developing robust bones in broilers and layers. It regulates the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, which both play a critical role in bone calcification.

When vitamin D3 is included in poultry diets, it naturally has to go through two metabolic transformations in the bird’s body – first in the liver and then in the kidneys – before it reaches a form that is bioavailable. This time-consuming process reduces the effective level of vitamin D3 in the bloodstream.

Thanks to its formulation as the bioactive metabolite 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25OHD3), Hy-D® allows the first of these stages to be bypassed. This delivers faster and more efficient uptake of the required metabolite, increasing serum vitamin D levels creating stronger skeletons and healthier, more productive animals.

Faster and more efficient absorption

Hy-D® increases levels of vitamin D circulating the bloodstream, improving skeletal development and animal performance while reducing the incidence of tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) and associated lameness.

Improved skeletal strength reduces the bone porosity that can lead to the discoloration of meat and bones after cooking commonly known as ‘black bone’ syndrome. This syndrome leads to consumer complaints and increased wastage of food.

Research confirms that supplementation of poultry diets with Hy-D®, the most advanced and safest source of vitamin D, makes for healthier and more productive birds, boosting farmers’ operating margins.

Hy-D® – strength to succeed in poultry

Hy-D®, our specific vitamin D3 metabolite, provides animals with a fast track to a strong skeleton and better performance. For our customers, this means a fast track to higher returns.

Birds need a strong skeleton if they are to achieve their potential. Hy-D® is a specific feed additive proven to:

  • Improve bone strength and density
  • Optimize health and immune function
  • Maximize meat and egg yield
  • Improve hatchability and day-old chick quality
  • Increase meat and egg quality

Experimental trials and the results of extensive global commercial use show that Hy-D® can deliver a return on investment in excess of 5:1.

Hy-D® and poultry meat

Achieving a robust frame is fundamental to breeding strong, high-yielding broilers and turkeys.

Profitability in poultry meat production is driven by:

  • High survivability
  • Increased breast meat yields
  • Higher carcass acceptance by processors
  • Greater skeletal strength

Hy-D® has shown to deliver on all fronts:

  • Increased daily liveweight gain
  • Superior feed conversion rates
  • Increased meat yield per bird
  • A higher proportion of acceptable carcasses
  • Superior meat quality with higher consumer acceptance and reduced incidence of black bone syndrome

Hy-D® for breeders and layers

To produce better eggs and chicks in greater numbers, farmers must first breed a better hen.

To maximize profitability in poultry egg units, farmers need to:

  • Increase lay persistency
  • Minimize mortality rates
  • Achieve high hatchability rates
  • Produce top quality day-old chicks
  • Maximize the number of chicks born per hen

Adding Hy-D® to breeder and layer diets has shown to deliver big benefits, such as:

  • Increased survival rate of birds in early lay
  • Superior lay persistency – up to 1.5% more eggs
  • Greater proportion of saleable eggs with fewer broken shells
  • Increased number of live chicks hatched and reduced incidences of early mortality

Hy-D® – strength to succeed in swine

In the evolving context of swine production, genetic improvement for lean deposition and prolificacy and the preventive aspect of pig health management, Hy-D® is a unique solution that supports immune competency, skeletal development and muscle accretion.

The main benefits of Hy-D® due of its better bioavailability compare to the classical vitamin D sources, include increased skeletal health in gilts that improves selection rate by 7%, a 3% increase in litter birth weight after feeding Hy-D® during gestation, a 3% increase in weaning weight when Hy-D® was included in lactation feed, and a 2.6% decrease in fattener death accompany by a 2.5 kg increase in slaughter weight during the fattening period.

Hy-D® gives pigs the strength and health to achieve their genetic potential, maximizing profitability.

More productive sows

A strong skeleton is crucial for high productivity – and this is precisely what Hy-D® delivers. Frame and leg weaknesses are among the major reasons for sow culling. Hy-D® helps reduce these losses by building stronger sows.

Experience shows that stronger sows:

  • Last longer
  • Produce more piglets per litter
  • Produce heavier piglets at birth
  • Produce larger weaned piglets in greater numbers

These combined benefits result in greater lifetime performance and higher financial returns.

More gilts selected

Replacement gilts have the best genetics, so farmers want as many as possible available to enter the herd. Improving body conformation – particularly leg and feet soundness – will mean that more gilts are selected for the herd. Hy-D® enables higher gilt selection because it delivers a stronger skeleton.

Trials across the world have proven the power of Hy-D®. On average 7% more gilts were selected when diets were supplemented, resulting in a return on investment of 9:1.

Hy-D® is an essential building block for stronger sows and gilts – and for bigger profits.

Stronger fattener pigs

Hy-D® supplementation offers significant benefits for fattener pigs, enhancing both immune competency and bone health. Elevated 25-OH-D3 blood levels during the fattening period improve immune competency, leading to a decrease signs of swine inflammation and necrosis syndrome (SINS) and better zootechnical performance.

Additionally, Hy-D® supports better bone health by increasing blood 25-OH-D3 levels, leading to improved bone strength and reduced lameness. Furthermore, Hy-D® improves calcium digestibility, allowing for decreased calcium levels in diets without compromising bone strength, thus optimizing mineral nutrition for better muscle and lean deposition potential via a better phosphorous digestibility.

Supporting skeletal formation in ruminants

Hy-D® supports skeletal formation in ruminants.
