1. Life cycle impact assessment (LCA) is a technique used to assess environmental impacts associated with all the stages of a product or process and its potential environmental impacts across the entire life cycle (creation, use, end-of-life) by modelling the complete system from which products are derived or in which processes and activities operates. Calculation based on pilot plant data, 1.7 kg CO2 eq / kg biogenic carbon uptake credit is associated with this product and accounted for in the published result.

DSM launched TILAMAR® PDO with NØØVISTA™ in September last year. Three months on, what is your take on the market reaction?

We feel very positive about the market response to date. 1.3-Propanediol is already an established ingredient but our grade has the unique features of being 100% bio-sourced from renewable, non-GMO feedstocks and certified as Microbiome Friendly in line with the MyMicrobiome 18.10 standard. This is where we are focusing our attention.

With multiple technical & performance ingredients players on the market, including some who already offer PDO variants, why have you decided to target this market?

The market for PDO is a broad and growing one and includes a small but rapidly growing segment interested in more sustainable solutions that are also microbiome-friendly, that is our PDO’s unique value proposition. What’s more, DSM can see that industrial biotechnology has an important role to play in reducing natural resource consumption and that consumers are becoming more willing to consider alternatives to traditional “naturals”. By capitalizing on our biotech capabilities, we can help our customers meet the needs of consumers looking for high-performance but more sustainable personal care technical & performance ingredients.

What do you plan next?

The trend for cleaner and more conscious beauty care is likely to be a considerable driver for change in our industry. To be fit for the future, we all need to consider the value we can bring to consumers beyond products – in terms of transparency and social and environmental responsibility. This is going to mean producing smarter and more sustainably. By building on its biotechnology expertise, DSM plans to bring other differentiated biotech products to the market in the coming months and help customers to future-proof their products.
