Today’s conscious consumers are increasingly aware of the environmental and social impact of beauty products and are becoming ideological in their buying preferences. Especially biotechnology will gain importance over the coming years, driven by environmental concerns and limited natural resources. With the launch of the multifunctional personal care ingredient TILAMAR® PDO with NØØVISTA™ we combine naturality, sustainability, conscious beauty and high performance in only one product. It is the first made-in-Europe cosmetic grade of PDO, 100% bio-sourced from non-GMO and palm oil-free feedstocks, sourced from a brand new eco-designed facility contributing to local industrial redevelopment and diversification. TILAMAR® PDO with NØØVISTA™ is a high-quality microbiome-friendly, multifunctional natural ingredient designed to reduce formulation complexity by acting as a preservative booster, a skin humectant, sensory enhancer, solvent and actives carrier.
TILAMAR® PDO with NØØVISTA™ represents a better climate-friendly sourcing option vs synthetic propylene glycol. Greenhouse gas emissions (cradle-to-gate) (kg CO2 eq. /kg) for TILAMAR® PDO with NØØVISTA™ are 27% less than for synthetic propylene glycol (produced in EU) 1.
1. Life cycle impact assessment (LCA) is a technique used to assess environmental impacts associated with all the stages of a product or process and its potential environmental impacts across the entire life cycle (creation, use, end-of-life) by modelling the complete system from which products are derived or in which processes and activities operates. Calculation based on pilot plant data, 1.7 kg CO2 eq / kg biogenic carbon uptake credit is associated with this product and accounted for in the published result.
2. Versus synthetic propylene glycol produced in EU
Few months after the market launch of TILAMAR® PDO with NOOVISTA™ DSM has had a conversation with the team experts behind the launch to get their first insight.
Rishabh PANDE, Vice President Marketing & Innovation at DSM
We feel very positive about the market response to date. 1.3-Propanediol is already an established ingredient but our grade has the unique features of being 100% bio-sourced from renewable, non-GMO feedstocks and certified as Microbiome Friendly in line with the MyMicrobiome 18.10 standard. This is where we are focusing our attention.
Bruno TRINQUART, Head of Global Marketing Technical & Performance Ingredients at DSM
The market for PDO is a broad and growing one and includes a small but rapidly growing segment interested in more sustainable solutions that are also microbiome-friendly, that is our PDO’s unique value proposition. What’s more, DSM can see that industrial biotechnology has an important role to play in reducing natural resource consumption and that consumers are becoming more willing to consider alternatives to traditional “naturals”. By capitalizing on our biotech capabilities, we can help our customers meet the needs of consumers looking for high-performance but more sustainable personal care technical & performance ingredients.
The trend for cleaner and more conscious beauty care is likely to be a considerable driver for change in our industry. To be fit for the future, we all need to consider the value we can bring to consumers beyond products – in terms of transparency and social and environmental responsibility. This is going to mean producing smarter and more sustainably. By building on its biotechnology expertise, DSM plans to bring other differentiated biotech products to the market in the coming months and help customers to future-proof their products.
TILAMAR® PDO with NØØVISTA™ is a microbiome-friendly ingredient for finished personal care products well tolerated by skin microbiome. This multifunctional personal care ingredient is a preservative booster to ensure the compliance with the microbiology market product requirements.
