OUR PURPOSE

Why we're commited to help close the micronutrient gap for all

Why we are committed to help end hidden hunger for all

Malnutrition affects 3 billion people worldwide,1 a crisis of astonishing scale which is too often underestimated and overlooked. dsm-firmenich is committed to contributing our expertise and resources to end malnutrition and hunger worldwide – and not only with the provision of Solutions for Essential and Equitable Nutrition. We campaign tirelessly to ensure that the global malnourished are seen, so that hunger is never hidden.

Too frequently malnutrition is perceived to be a consequence of natural disasters, war and disease. But this preventable condition is something billions live with – and die from – everyday. Malnutrition is a contributing factor in approximately 45% of deaths of children under the age of five. Many of these children will have nutrient-deficient mothers, which is a contributing factor in child malnutrition.3 With as many as two-thirds of women of reproductive age deficient in the key nutrients required for healthy growth and development, combating female malnutrition is critical for improving outcomes for communities and the socioeconomic development of countries.1

With the shocking magnitude of malnutrition clearly evident, we have an obligation to take immediate, meaningful action to work collaboratively and provide cost-effective nutritional interventions to resolve this. The time for underestimating and overlooking this crisis is over. We must tackle this urgent global emergency head-on to substantially improve quality of life for those most in need.

dsm-firmenich is committed to closing the micronutrient gap of 800 million by 2030 to end this crisis, but we can’t do it alone.  Download our infographic to grasp the true scale of micronutrient deficiencies and find proven solutions to overcome them.

Malnutrition has previously been grossly underestimated. Until 2022, changemakers worldwide held the belief that 2 billion were affected by hidden hunger, but new research has demonstrated that the figure was far below the scope of the real problem. Over half of all preschool-aged children and two-thirds of women or reproductive age are deficient in the key nutrients required for healthy growth and development.1 Malnutrition is clearly a far bigger issue than previously through and darkly colours the lives of over 3 billion people globally.

With the shocking magnitude of malnutrition now evident, we have an obligation to take immediate, meaningful action to provide cost-effective nutritional interventions and work collaboratively toward ending malnutrition in all its forms. The time for underestimating and overlooking this crisis over. We must tackle this urgent international emergency head-on to substantially improve quality of life for those most in need.

There is no good reason why billions of people should be prevented from reaching their full potential, due to micronutrient deficiencies. We have proven, cost-effective solutions. All sectors need to work together to scale up their delivery, urgently.
