B group vitamins act as coenzymes on different metabolic pathways and, in many biochemical reactions multiple B-group vitamins are involved at the same time. Their presence is fundamental for the normal functioning of the organism.

Niacin: the anti-pellagra factor 

The two forms of niacin or vitamin B3, nicotinic acid and nicotinamide, are functional parts of the coenzymes nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP), involved in the cellular respiration processes. About 200 enzymes require NAD or NADP. NAD is mainly involved in reactions that generate energy in the tissue through the degradation of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. NADP is involved in the biosynsthesis of fatty acids and cholesterol.
