Today, the age- and environment-induced breakdown of the papillary elastin network as a result of increased elastase activity is considered a key factor for reduced skin elasticity and thus needs to be kept strictly under control. The bioactive cosmetic ingredient ELHIBIN® PF is a carefully purified natural protein complex and its unique activity is based on the inhibition of leukocyte elastase’s damaging activity. ELHIBIN® PF protects the elastic fibers from breakdown, predominately in the papillary dermis. This unique activity helps retain perfectly elastic skin conditions and thus young looking, resilient skin appearance with age.
Elastin is the main component of the elastic fibers, which allow the skin to resume its shape after stretching or contracting. It is the elastic fibers that give the skin its resiliency and smooth feel. Elastic fibers are gradually degraded with age, especially the thin fibrils in the papillary dermis. This degradation is mediated through the intrinsic effects of the ageing process as well as by UV radiation. UV radiation leads to inflammation which in turn releases cytokines into the dermis. ELHIBIN® PF efficiently inhibits elastase activity, protecting the fibrils from UV-induced degradation. Elastase inhibition is therefore the perfect choice to fight against naturally occurring and externally induced elastin degradation.
