We make it possible

We enable our customers to produce sustainable and healthy animal proteins to solve the sustainability and commercial challenges we face in transforming how we feed the world.

We make this possible through the most comprehensive science-based animal nutrition solutions, intelligently scaled to fit local needs.

Tackling antimicrobial resistance

The use of antibiotics in animal feed as a growth promoter represents a growing public health threat and a major challenge for farmers, claiming the lives of some 700,000 animals every year. Which is why we have developed a family of animal nutrition solutions that tackle Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in farm animals ranging from chicks to swine. Just one example is a new feed additive called Balancius®, developed in partnership with Novozymes, that enables broiler1 chickens to digest nutrients more efficiently than ever before. As a result, farmers can now produce more food from the same amount of feed, thus improving their profitability while reducing their environmental footprint.

Reducing reliance on marine resources

The global aquaculture industry will need to increase production by 30 to 40 million tons per year by 2030 to keep pace with consumer demand. The problem: with some three billion people in the world relying on fish for their protein and nutrition, there are simply not enough fish in the sea. Which is why, together with Evonik we developed Veramaris® technology and nutritional solutions. We produce the essential omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA from natural marine algae instead of fish-based ingredients - at scale. In fact, we can already produce enough EPA and DHA to cover 15% of the global salmon industry’s annual demand.

Reducing livestock emissions

Today, animal farming accounts for 14.5% of all human-derived greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We need to find a way of producing healthy animal protein in a more sustainable way, which is why our bright minds have developed a family of innovative feed additives that reduce livestock emissions. One such example is a unique feed additive called Bovaer® which suppresses the enzyme that triggers methane production inside cows. By feeding each cow just a quarter teaspoon of Bovaer® each day we’re reducing its methane emissions by up to 30%

Improving lifetime performance

Ensuring that animals receive the right balance of essential and irreplaceable micronutrients is essential for maintaining their health and productivity for longer. Today, some US$300 billion a year is lost to animal disease, so at DSM we developed nutritional programs and solutions that combat this problem. In poultry, for instance, our Hy-D® feed additive gives birds the strong skeleton they need to thrive - boosting their immune system and ultimately enabling farmers to increase their meat and egg yield.

Efficient use of natural resources

As animal production grows, so the industry needs to find inventive new ways of doing more with less. One example is protein. It’s essential for any animal’s growth, but it’s also one of the most expensive parts of any livestock’s diet. This is where we are really helping the industry - for example through proteases (enzymes) that break down protein molecules and improve the animal’s digestibility; thus enabling farmers to reduce the quality and quantity of protein in their feed, with no compromise on animal health.

Safe, quality nutrition & less food waste

Around one-third of animal protein-based food is currently lost or wasted. But animal feed can play an important role in transforming the way we feed our animals - and improve the quality of the meat, milk, fish and eggs they produce. Hence, DSM has developed the Optimum Vitamin Nutrition™ approach. For example, we apply our unique understanding of vitamin D to help hens lay strong, nutritious eggs with less breakages; while our knowledge of vitamin E during the growth phase of animal production helps improve meat quality and enables a long shelf life.
