The world’s population is projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050. At the same time, demand for healthier and more nutrient-dense diets is increasing — driven not only by population growth but also by changing health awareness and consumer expectations. The requirement for animal protein is projected to keep rising as people in many parts of the world seek to raise their animal protein intake to achieve balanced, healthy diets. 

Animal production comes at a cost, however. Rising demand for animal protein is driving up greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and piling pressure on natural resources. Enabling sustainable animal production is therefore of paramount importance. We have a range of innovative solutions that do just that.

Replacing fish with Veramaris® algal oil

Some three billion people in the world rely on fish from our oceans for protein and nutrition; and many more benefit from the rich omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil supplements. Neither humans nor salmon are able to synthesize omega-3 in sufficient quantities – hence the need for these essential nutrients to be supplemented in the diet to maintain healthy growth. Veramaris® is an algae-based oil that provides the first viable alternative to fish oil for this valuable source of omega-3.

Significantly less methane emissions from cattle

Cows generate methane, a greenhouse gas with consequences for our planet. Bovaer® is a feed additive for cows (and other ruminants) that suppresses the enzyme that triggers methane production in a cow’s rumen and consistently reduces enteric methane emission by approximately 30%.

Consumer studies indicate that people worldwide have strong cultural preferences regarding the color of the food they eat. Our color measurement tools allow feed producers to supplement their feed with the type and quantity of carotenoids that will deliver precise and consistent food color and meet consumer expectations around the world.

Reducing emissions from livestock

Livestock and fish production account for 14.5% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We have developed solutions that help address these issues. Bovaer® reduces the methane emissions from ruminants, our phytase feed enzymes reduce phosphorus pollution, and our Eubiotic VevoVitall® lowers ammonia (nitrogen) emissions from swine operations.

Reducing food loss and waste

More than 1 billion tons of food are lost or wasted each year, meaning that approximately 24% of all food calories produced are never eaten.
